"Fujitsu Rancang Komputer Supercepat RIKEN"
Pernah membayangkan bagaimana hebatnya komputer berkekuatan 10-Petaflops? Tunggu kehadiran RIKEN, superkomputer yang saat ini sedang dirancang Fujitsu. Kalau sampai terealisasi, artinya komputer ini akan memiliki kemampuan hampir 10 kali lipat dibanding komputer tercepat yang ada saat ini, yaitu Roadrunner milik IBM berkecepatan 1,105 petaflops.
Sebagai informasi, 1 petaflop setara dengan 1 quadrillion komputasi matematika per detik. Bayangkan betapa superiornya RIKEN yang ditargetkan mencapai angka 10 petaflops.
Pembangunan RIKEN dilaksanakan vendor asal Jepang ini di tanah airnya, tepatnya Institute of Physical and Chemical Research. Nama RIKEN sendiri diambil dari singkatan nama asli lembaga penelitian tersebut dalam bahasa Jepang, yaitu Rikagaku Kenkyusho. Takumi Maruyama (kepala departemen pengembangan prosesor Fujitsu) menyatakan RIKEN akan didasarkan pada prosesor masa depan Fujitsu, Sparc64 VIIIfx. Prosesor ini merupakan peningkatan dibanding Sparc64 VII yang mereka produksi dua tahun lalu.
Dalam konferensi Hot Chips di Stanford University, Selasa (25/8), Maruyama memamerkan preview prosesor terbarunya. Sparc64 VIIIfx memiliki delapan inti dengan masing-masing berkecepatan 2 GHz dan akses cache L2 sebesar 5 MB. Setiap prosesor diklaim mampu menyelesaikan tugas sebesar 128 Gigaflops tetapi hanya mengonsumsi daya 58 watt.
RIKEN akan bersaing dengan proyek superkomputer lain produksi IBM. Mesin tersebut, dilabeli Blue Waters, juga akan berjalan pada prosesor terbaru IBM, Power7. Rencananya, proyek ini bakal dikerjakan di University of Illinois, Amerika Serikat.
